Have you ever bought something expensive for your health, only to find the review that would’ve changed your mind after it showed up at your door? I have. Wellness gear reviews are everywhere these days. Cold plunges, saunas, red light panels, sleep gadgets—each one has tons of YouTube videos and endless “Top 10” lists promising life-changing results. Most of it is just hype. So when I find a source I really trust, I stick with it. For me, that’s David Maus Jr.
I Found Him One Purchase Too Late
Here’s my confession: I’d already bought my first cold plunge before I ever came across his channel. I wish I’d found him sooner.
But the cold plunge I have now is my second one, the HomePlunge H3, and I absolutely love it. I wouldn’t have even known about it if it weren’t for his reviews. That alone shows how much ground he covers.
By the time I started shopping for my first sauna, I had found him, and I made a much better decision because of it.
That’s the difference a trustworthy reviewer makes. Same guy, same wallet, two very different buying experiences.
Why I Trust His Wellness Gear Reviews
Once I started watching, it didn’t take long to realize two things: he really knows what he’s talking about, and he cares about the people watching. Here’s what sets him apart for me.
He covers the whole spectrum
Take cold plunges. He’ll show you how to build a DIY setup on a budget, and he’ll also review the most high-end units on the market. You get the full range, not just whatever brand happens to be sponsoring this month.
He looks at the company, not just the product
This one surprised me. He goes into the health of the company itself—sometimes interviewing the founders and visiting their facilities. When you’re spending real money on something you’ll use for years, knowing the company will still be around to back it up matters.
He actually measures things
His reviews go deep. For example, he uses a decibel meter to check how loud a chiller is. You won’t find that kind of detail on a spec sheet, and it really matters when the unit is in your garage or bathroom.
He puts it this way: “I test it like I would for myself or my best friend. I don’t just open the box and say ‘cool product.’” He even left his own chiller outside through Florida hurricanes and summer heat, with no cover, just to see if it would hold up. It did.
He teaches you how to use it
He doesn’t just say, “buy this one.” He gives real advice on how to do a cold plunge, a sauna session, or a full contrast therapy session. I wish more reviewers did that.
Research and real life
A lot of what he shares is based on research. But I also like that he sometimes just tells you what works for him and his family. Both are important. Studies show what works on average, but real life shows what it’s like to actually keep up with it.
“Doesn’t He Sound a Little Salesy?”
Yes, I know. He can come across that way sometimes. But he spent a long time in the family car business (Maus Family Automotive in Florida), so a little of that energy comes with the territory.
And here’s the part that won me over. He spent about 20 years in that business, rose to Vice President, and was the face of the dealership in its commercials. Then he walked away from all of it, with no backup plan, to do this full time. He said he felt like he was “just tolerating life.” That’s not the move of someone chasing an easy sale.
He gives discount codes for the gear he recommends. That’s how creators make a living. But I believe he’s sincere in his reviews, and he practices what he preaches—he uses this stuff himself. Honestly, his channel is big enough now that he has no reason not to tell you the truth. A bad recommendation would cost him more than any single sale is worth. He’s even said it himself: “I’ll never lock into an exclusive deal, because the moment I do that, I’m no longer a reviewer—I’m a salesperson.” That’s exactly the line I want a reviewer to hold.
Faith Without the Sermon
One more thing I appreciate is that he lets people know he’s a Christian without being preachy. He’s talked openly about his faith on podcasts like this one, but his channel stays focused on helping people. Before he left the dealership, he prayed with his pastor about it and said, “I felt God say, I got you, don’t worry.” Today he describes his mission as to “glorify God in everything that I do.” You can see that in how he treats his audience. That’s the balance I try to keep here, too. Taking care of the body God gave us is part of stewardship, not a distraction from it.
How I Judge Biohacking Product Reviews Now
Watching him has changed how I size up any review. Here’s my quick checklist:
- Do they show the downsides? If everything is perfect, keep scrolling.
- Do they test it, or just unbox it? Measurements and long-term use beat first impressions.
- Do they cover cheaper options too? A reviewer who only shows $10,000 gear isn’t thinking about you.
- Do they look at the company? Warranty, support, and staying power matter.
- Do they use it themselves? Walking the talk is the whole point.
Pro tip: Before you buy any big-ticket wellness gear, search the product name plus “David Maus Jr.” If he’s reviewed it, watch that first.
A Recent Favorite
I’m a bit of a sleep enthusiast (okay, more than a bit—see my sleep tech roundup), so this recent video of his was perfect for me: I Ditched Sleep Supplements… and Did THIS Instead! He explains how he stopped relying on sleep supplements and built a nighttime routine, including his contrast therapy protocol, that consistently gets him sleep scores over 90.
I love the idea of using contrast therapy instead of supplements to get great sleep. Worth giving a try!
Bottom Line
If you want the best advice on which cold plunge, sauna, or other wellness gear to buy, he’s the best source I’ve found. Just check out his YouTube channel. Out of all the wellness gear reviews out there, his are the ones I actually trust, and I wish I’d found them one purchase sooner.
Who do you trust before you buy wellness gear? I’d love to hear who’s on your list.
